Have you noticed a sleek new design adorning Michigan driver's licenses lately? If not, you're in for a surprise! Starting in late January 2024, the state of Michigan began issuing revamped driver's licenses sporting a fresh look and enhanced security features. While these changes are aimed at improving security and modernizing the design, they may pose a challenge for notaries who must verify the authenticity of these IDs.
Gone are the days of bland, uninspired designs. Michigan's new driver's licenses boast a modern aesthetic with vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and updated typography. The revamped design reflects the state's commitment to staying current with evolving trends while ensuring the utmost security for its residents' personal identification.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the new Michigan driver's licenses come equipped with advanced security features designed to thwart counterfeiting and fraudulent use. These features include a Great Lakes tri-color security image.
While these changes are undoubtedly beneficial for safeguarding against identity theft and fraud, they may present challenges for notaries tasked with verifying the authenticity of Michigan driver's licenses. At first glance, the intricate design elements and advanced security features could raise suspicions of counterfeit or tampered IDs. Please note that the back of the card will no longer have the magnetic stripe.
Notary Best Practices
To navigate these challenges effectively, notaries should familiarize themselves with the new Michigan driver's license design and its security features. Here are some best practices to consider:
Stay Informed: Stay updated on any changes or updates to state-issued IDs, including driver's licenses.
Read the attached flyer. It’s a good idea to print it and carry it with you until you become familiar enough with the new license that you no longer question the validity when presented with this new license style.
Trust Your Instincts: If something seems suspicious or out of place, trust your instincts and proceed with caution.
